The Word of Life Bible study is in its tenth year studying the Books of the Bible. Drawing on creator Jeff Cavins’ The Great Adventure resources, course offerings “ . . . explore the biblical narrative in light of Catholic teaching and the historical, cultural, and literary context of the Scriptures to discover what Scripture reveals about God’s plan and our place within it.” The course to date has studied Books from the Old as well as the New Testament.
Each week the course workbook provides a list of questions on the lesson that are to be answered prior to the group meeting. These questions are addressed via group discussion in an 1.5 hour meeting. A video lecture is also included in course materials for participants to view at home after the session. In addition the author of the study provides answers to the questions discussed in the workbook. This allows multiple encounters with the covered scripture—enhancing understanding and retention.
Preparation for the study each week requires about 1.5 hours; we gather on Tuesday nights from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. This year we are studying the Gospel of Matthew. The course runs from September each year to May; we typically have 15-20 participants each year.
This is an application bible study. We study what the Scripture says and how to apply this to our lives. It is a study to make disciples of Jesus Christ through study of his Word, which emphasizes our Lord’s parting words in Matthew 28:18-20 “….go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”
If your soul pants for the Lord as the deer pants for streams of water, this is great place to start—with the Word of God. It is your very life.
